Transfer by private vehicle to Ta Prohm, this beautiful Buddhist temple was built in 1186. Is one of Angkor’s jewels and is overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting yet exotic atmosphere. Drive a short distance to Ta Keo, which would have been one of the finest temples in Angkor had it been completed. Continue to Angkor Thom, not a temple, but an entire walled city of 9 square kilometers and the royal Capital from 1181. With a population of 1 million, it was far bigger than any city in Europe at the time. The center piece is Bayon temple crowned with 216 giant, smiling faces of King Jayavarman VII. Also visit the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King, which houses almost perfectly preserved carvings.

Return to your hotel to relax and have lunch (on your own).

After a leisurely break your exploration continues as you enter the rear gate of Angkor Wat (early 12th century). Surrounded by a 190 meter wide moat 1.5 kilometers by 1.3 kilometers it is claimed to be the largest religious building in the world. The temple, which took 30 years to construct & used the labors of 300,000 workers was built as the earthly representation of the universe with its' central tower symbolizing Mt Meru which, Hindus believe, is at the center of the Universe.

Later, return to your hotel late afternoon.

DAY 3: Siem Reap

Breakfast included)

After breakfast, explore the Banteay Srei Area

Depart this morning for Banteay Srei temple, the only major temple that was not built by a monarch. It was constructed in the 10th century and was dedicated to the Hindu god - Shiva. Banteay Srei translates to “Citadel of the Women” and is one of Angkor’s most significant structures as its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings which have been preserved remarkably well. After a refreshing drink (own arrangements) at Prasat Banteay Srei Restaurant, head to the Banteay Srey Butterfly Center, an interactive butterfly farm nestled in a luxurious tropical garden. Morning is the best time of the day to spot as many butterflies as possible. Thousands of free flying Southeast Asian species will surround you. Then transfer back to town.

Notice it’s unusually shaped stupa designed to look like a lotus flower but referred to by locals as “the watermelon stupa.” Notice the stunning “tree of life” mosaic set on its western exterior wall.
